Beethoven moonlight sonata free mp4 download
In No 3 Beethoven derails expectations in the opposite way from No 1. Instead of ruffling the simple pastoral tune—almost a nursery rhyme—he makes it confiding, mysterious, with a nonchalant deflection from F major to D major and a dip from piano to pianissimo—a moment that blurs wit and poetry. Beethoven is at his most capricious in No 5, a C major scherzo that seems to poke fun at the strutting rhythms of the then-fashionable polonaise.
Again the C minor central trio, with its right-hand melody in octaves and surging triplets deep in the bass, brings maximum contrast. After an embellished repeat of the melody, the poetic coda suggests softly pealing bells. Published at the end of as Op 14, they were dedicated to Baroness Josephine von Braun, wife of the director of the Viennese court theatre. In the easy-paced opening allegro, the main theme initially teases the listener as to which is the main beat—the kind of rhythmic ambiguity Haydn loved.
At the centre of the development Beethoven plays a Haydnesque trick by bringing back the main theme, as if to herald the recapitulation. But as the key here is E flat major, rather than the tonic, G, few early listeners would have been fooled by this falsest of false reprises. For his slow movement Beethoven writes a set of three variations on a childlike theme, a march-on-tiptoe akin to some of the calculatedly naive nursery tunes in late Haydn and late Mozart. This prepares us for more Haydnesque fun in the bucolic scherzo-cum-finale, launched by a main theme that cavorts impishly across the bar lines—a reminder, too, that the first movement had delighted in playing rhythmic games with the listener.
The variations are an elaborate take on the traditional chaconne, a ceremonial triple-time dance over a ground bass that was popularized at the court of Louis XIV. The stern eight-bar theme, with its emphasis on the second beat of the bar a characteristic of the chaconne, played up by Beethoven , is underpinned by a chromatically falling lamento bass. The poetic heart of the work lies in the five central major-keyed variations, beginning with No 12, closer in outline to the original theme than any of the previous variations.
Opening the final, minor-keyed group of variations, No 17 marked dolce dissolves the theme in a soft, almost Schumannesque glow. Internet Archive's 25th Anniversary Logo. Search icon An illustration of a magnifying glass.
