No download progress shown for iOS updates in Finder in Catalina. Thread starter usagora Start date Jun 13, Tags developers finder ios progress software. Joined Jul 6, Messages Reaction score 50 Points Yes, this is nit-picky, but that's what software developers should be. I was surprised to discover just now, the first time updating my iPhone using Catalina, that there is no download progress shown when downloading an iOS update.

Now, maybe I'm just strange, but it seems to me a fundamental principle of good UI design is to never leave the user hanging--ALWAYS give feedback so they're not left wondering what's happening. All you get is a spinning arrows icon next to your phone in the Finder sidebar.

How much has it downloaded? How much longer will it take? Is it hung up? Nobody knows because Apple software developers neglected to include this simple feature. Previously in iTunes, there were a couple instances where the software download was hung up - under Catalina I would have no idea and would be wasting time thinking it was downloading when it wasn't. Found this thread on it, which indicates this has been an issue since the public beta: iOS Software Download Progress in Finder - Apple Community I mean, how can we now be at Why not download the updates directly on the iPhone or iPad?

There is a progress bar there that shows you what is going on. Last edited: Jun 14, MacInWin said:. I think Apple is pushing to make the iDevices less dependent on the Mac, to go directly to Apple for updates, upgrades, applications, etc.

So that is a trend, I suppose. The Finder interface is a substitute for the iTunes backup process and not much else. Music directly works for music, Books for ebooks, so the one function in iTunes that was left was backup.

I suspect that will be overcome and replaced as well. So people are still going to need to have a wired connection to their Mac to sync that content that resides on their Mac. Not sure Apple cares that much about what folks might want. For every person who holds your point of view there is one who doesn't want to be tethered to a Mac to get an update. And right now I suspect you are in the minority on this.

I suspect most folks want to be able to do things "on the move" as it were. As for Music, it's an app. You don't need to subscribe to Apple's Music service to use it. And you don't need to use Photos over iCloud, either. Image Capture will get the pictures to your Mac, but it seems to need a cabled connection right now. For example, for a 2. By running the above command periodically, we can somewhat know how long it may still take or at least the downloading is still in progress and not stopped because of network or other issue.

It used to give the download percentage as far as I remember and an estimated time remaining. The terminal command being the only option for now, you can use this 'while' loop on the terminal:.

The numeric value after they keyword "sleep" is the number of seconds the code sleep before repeating itself again. So a value of 20 20 secs means, the same ls -lhrt command gets repeated after 20 seconds and shows you the most recent downloaded side of the file.

So you do not have to repeatedly type the command again and again. Just set your preferred time in second after "sleep".

MacOs really looks like there is just one programmer writing entire system. Oct 31, PM. Page content loaded. I just updated mine to I tend to set upgrades off and go and get on with something else and only do while-U-wait on Syncs.

It is now extremely difficult to position a time consuming task and call back without being able to provide ETA guidance or track download progress.

You can temporarily remove apps from the list if a message asks you to do so because the update requires more space. Tap Continue or Cancel to do so. Answer: A: If you have something else to do on your iPhone, you can continue to download while the download is active.

If you get away from Wi-Fi, the download will be paused and you will need to return to using Wi-Fi when you get back. The iTunes toolbar will appear when you click the device button. Click the device button to update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

You can check for updates on the Summary tab. You can download and update your files by clicking Download and Update. A weak or no connection to Wi-Fi is one of the main reasons why an iPhone gets stuck on Update Requested, or any other part of the update process.

Updates progress as they are requested, downloaded, prepared, and installed.
